MIAM Meeting pic2-ukms

A MIAM (Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting) is the first step when dealing with separation, child arrangements or any family dispute. It’s a short, confidential meeting with a qualified mediator where you explain your situation, and we advise on the best options to move forward.

In most cases, before you can apply to the family court, you are legally required to attend a MIAM. This rule has been in place since 2014 to encourage families to resolve issues quicker, with less conflict, and at a lower cost than going to court.

At the end of the meeting, if mediation is unsuitable or you choose to go directly to court without mediating with the other person, we can sign the required court form (C100 or Form A), allowing you to make an application to the family court without delay.

What Happens During a MIAM?

A MIAM is a private, one-to-one meeting with a qualified family mediator. It gives you the chance to:

Understand the process
We explain how mediation works, the benefits, and how it can help you avoid the cost and stress of court.

Receive legal information
Your mediator can provide neutral legal information about the family court process, parental responsibility, financial disclosure and what courts typically consider — helping you make informed decisions.

Check if mediation is right for you
The mediator assesses whether mediation is safe, suitable, and appropriate for your situation — including any safeguarding concerns.

Share your concerns confidentially
You can talk openly about your children, finances, communication, or anything affecting the dispute — without the other person present.

Agree the best next step
Your mediator will guide you on what happens next — whether that’s starting mediation sessions or issuing the relevant court form if mediation isn’t suitable.

The meeting lasts around 45-60 minutes and is attended individually by either party.
